The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna has stated that the party was watching the developments on the reports which claim that a Minister of the government may be the common candidate in the forthcoming presidential election.

JVP Propaganda Secretary, MP Vijitha Heart has told the BBC that the party will take a decision taking into account how the political environment evolves in the country.

However, the JVP will not support Ranil Wickremesinghe as the common candidate under any circumstances, he has added, stating that the majority of the people do not feel that he can win.

He has added that the JVP was repeatedly demanding not to call for the illegal presidential election, stating that in the event the election is called, the JVP will work to defeat President Mahinda Rajapaksa. He added that if the president was going above the law it can have dire consequences and therefore the JVP will work tirelessly to stop this.

He has also added that the JVP has never said that it will not contest the presidential election.
