President Mahinda Rajapaksa has convened all office bearers of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and Central Committee members to Temple Trees for a hurriedly arranged meeting.
The meeting will be aimed at expelling SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena from all the positions he is presently holding in the party.
Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake’s name has already been proposed as the replacement of Minister Sirisena. The Central Committee, according to the constitution of the party, has the authority to appoint its new General Secretary.
The lparty leadership has already taken measures to suspend the party membership of Maithripala Sirisena, Rajitha Senaratne and other Parliamentarians who took part in the press conference in Colombo this evening.
Meanwhile, Maithripala Sirisena clearly stated during the press conference that he is still the General Secretary of the party. However, his continuation in office as the General Secretary of the party will be decided based on the "power" he wields in the Central Committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.
At the same time, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, who addressed the same press conference, hinted of a highly important development. “We will appoint Maithripala Sirisena as the leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and we have embarked on that mission,” the former President asserted.
“I am happy to be part of this historic mission and I am grateful to all parties who allowed me to do so. I am back at my old home and it is good to be back,” former President Kumaratunga said addressing a press conference at New Town Hall in Colombo.
“Core values of the party and its basic principles were violated in broad daylight,” Kumaratunga said while stressing the need of re-gaining the Sri Lanka Freedom Party into the hands of real soils of the son.
