One person was admitted to Nagoda Hospital following a shootout in Maggona during a function that was organized to support the common candidate of the opposition.
The person who is injured is a local government member of the United National Party. He was rushed to Nagoda Hospital soon after the incident and was later transferred to National Hospital Colombo due to seriousness of his head injuries, hospital sources confirmed.
It is learnt that those who opened fire at the activists of the opposition are supporters of a Minister of the government, representing the Kalutara District.
No arrest has so far been made in connection with the incident.
The shootout took place just minutes after Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya announced the date of the election.
