Uva PC To Be Toppled Next Week: Harin To “Force Open” The Council

December 06, 2014

Opposition Leader of the Uva Provincial Council Harin Fernando today assured that the Uva Provincial Council, led by Chief Minister Shasheendra Rajapaksa, would be toppled next week.

He said he had received positive indications from the ruling party members of the council and the opposition only needs the support of three UPFA councilors to topple the council.

“Crucial negotiations,” Fernando said, “are underway these days.”

Meanwhile, the opposition of the council are in the process of collecting signatures these days to recommence the sessions of the council – which were postponed till January citing “unusually cold weather conditions”. Postponement of the council sessions, according to Fernando, was a desperate attempt to save the provincial council from falling.

Fernando expressed confidence that the opposition will be able to re-open the council next week with the support of majority of members.

Meanwhile, commenting on the matter a few days ago, Chief Minister of Uva Provincial Council Shasheendra Rajapaksa said if Harin Fernando wants to be the Chief Minister of Uva, he should discuss the matter with President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Shasheendra Rajapksa  made this remark as a reply to Opposition Leader of Uva Province Harin Fernando’s claims of a possible overturn of Uva Provincial Council.
