Gunshots were fired at the opposition rally in Aralaganwila when Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena was leaving the stage.
Sources close to him confirmed Asian Mirror that the Common Candidate has not sustained injuries due to the incident.
The Common Candidate's media team said the gunshots were fired at the stage and MSD security officers of Maithripala Sirisena confirmed the incident.
When the firing occurred, the rally was still underway. Opposition sources said a former UNP Provincial Councilor was injured due to the attack.
An angry Sirisena supporter who was at the rally told Asian Mirror that MP Roshan Ranasinghe's supporters were responsible for the incident.
It is learnt that there was a clash between two groups prior to the shooting incident. One group was Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena's supporters and the other group was identified as MP Roshan Ranasinghe's supporters.
Police said it received complaints from both sides over the clash.
