"TNA Will Not Accept Positions In Maithri Govt; But Will Support Advisory Council"

The Tamil National Alliance today indicated that it would not accept ministerial portfolios under Maithripala Sirisena’s government; but assured to play an active role in the process of making constitutional changes.

TNA Parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran, speaking to media, said the party was yet to make a decision on the role it should play in the new government which would be formed after Maithripala Sirisena’s ascension to power.

“Until the party makes a decision on the matter, I would like to give my personal opinion. We should not be part of the government although we support Maithripala Sirisena’s candidature at the presidential election,” Sumanthiran said.

“However,” Sumanthiran said, “we will join the advisory council which will be set up under the 100 day programme.”

The TNA Parliamentarian also added that the JVP too would play a similar role under the new administration of Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena.

“The country is presently facing a dictatorship and that was the main reason why we decided to support the Common Candidate. The second issue is lack of democracy and lack of judicial independence. We consider these problems as national issues that affect the Tamil people,” he added.
