SLFP Ex-Co And Central Committee Meet To Make Maithri's Party Leadership Official

The Executive Committee and the Central Committees of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will meet today evening to endorse the decision to appoint President Maithripala Sirisena as the party Chairman.

The meetings will take place at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute this evening with the participation of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and President Maithripala Sirisena.

Asian Mirror earlier reported that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa agreed to hand over the Chairmanship of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party to incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena.

The leadership of the party came into question as a group of SLFP MPs extended their support to President Maithripala Sirisena. While crossing over they said that the leadership of the party naturally gets transferred to the Incumbent President as the former leader of the SLFP was defeated by its General Secretary.

However, with the whole of the SLFP supporting President Maithripala Sirisena, he can easily secure two thirds majority in the House. This will allow him to proceed with the 100 day programme and introduce constitutional amendments without legal or constitutional impediments.
