'No Agreement Yet To Field Sangakkara As Candidate At General Election': UNP

A top level spokesman of the United National Party told Asian Mirror that the party has still not arrived at any agreement with Kumar Sangakkara on contesting the forthcoming General Election.
However, highly placed party sources told Asian Mirror that a person by the name of Thushara Wanniarachchi had attempted to approach Sangakkara to contest the election from the district of Kandy. Wanniarachchi was a staunch supporter of the party during the recent presidential election campaign. Sangakkara is presently taking part in the ICC World Cup 2015 - after which he will resign from international cricket.
"Apart from that," the Spokesman said," there's no agreement or anything of that sort with Sangakkara in terms of the forthcoming Parliamentary election."
 
Meanwhile, a senior Cabinet Minister told Asian Mirror on Friday that the party is presently holding discussions with several popular figures who have been identified as potential candidates to be fielded at the General Election, which is to be held in June.

He also added that a special meeting in connection with the General Election was held at Sirikotha on Thursday which was attended by some key office bearers of the United National Party. It was clearly communicated at the meeting that the party was keen on going for an election immediately after the 100 day programme.
