Leader of Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, Western Provincial Councilor Udaya Gammanpila yesterday (06) said that there were conspiracies going on in order to jail former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa by filing court cases against them.
He made this claim addressing the "Dinu Nihadasa Anathure" rally in Kandy, which was organized to urge SLFP to name former president Rajapaksa as its Prime Ministerial candidate.
Gammanpila also pointed out that despite these attempts the constitution has stated that a former president cannot be taken to courts on activities done by him or her during presidential tenure.
Moreover sending a statement to the rally, former president Rajapaksa asserted that he would like to thank everyone who came to Kandy to take part in the rally, despite 'strange' rules and regulations introduced by SLFP.
"If I am handed over a punishment for something I did to protect my country, I will take it as an honor” Rajapaksa said in his statement.
“Dinu Nidahasa Anathure” rally which was held yesterday was the second rally organized by several parties of UPFA including Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, National Freedom Front, Left Democratic Front and Mahajana Eksath Peramuna.
Former ministers Wimal Weerawansa, Vasudeva Nanayakkara and Dinesh Gunawardena also addressed the rally.
