Former Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa stated that he will return to Sri Lanka on Tuesday (21) and is planning to attend the parliament session on the same day.
Speaking to a vernacular newspaper, Rajapaksa said that he took political decisions and did not engage in financial fraud. Therefore, he insisted that he does not have any problem in returning to the island.
Basil Rajapaksa left Sri Lanka soon after the defeat of his brother Mahinda Rajapaksa at the presidential election on January 8. Several weeks afterwards, he indicated that he was effectively resigning from politics.
Rajapaksa was summoned to the police Financial Crimes Investigation Division to give a statement on the Divi Neguma Department. On March 30, his lawyer Palitha Fernando informed the FCID, Attorney General and Inspector General of Police (IGP) that Rajapaksa would give the statement to the FCID as soon as he returned to the country.
