Contradictory statements coming from Sri Lanka Freedom Party has raised doubt on its position regarding the pro-Mahinda Rajapaksa rally to be held in Kurunegala on Thursday.
A media release from the party stated on Wednesday that the SLFP MPs should adhere to the Central Committee decision and refrain from attending the rally. The release bears the title “SLFP Media Spokesman” but does not have a name or a signature.
The statement said that President Maithripala Sirisena and former president Mahinda Rajapaksa held discussions on the future of the party and it was agreed that future UPFA meetings should be held under the leadership of SLFP.
Speaking to local media, SLFP Media Spokesman Dilan Perera insisted that he has not released such a statement.
However, SLFP National Organizer Susil Premajayantha told media that there was such a release and it could have been sent by the party office.
The rally organized by four parties in the UPFA is the fourth of a series of rallies, demanding former president Rajapaksa be named the UPFA candidate for Prime Minister.
