Eelavar Democratic Front leader Rajanathan Prabaharan stated that the party will contest the upcoming general election in the north, east and Central Highlands individually, under its symbol, the plough.
Prabaharan said that his intention was to safeguard the liberty of the people. The EDF will support any party which comes to power will work with them for the betterment of the people, he added.
Although a minor player in Sri Lanka's Tamil politics, the EDF has a history of 40 years. It emerged as the political wing of the former militant group Eelam Revolutionary Organization of Students (EROS) formed in 1975. EROS contested the 1989 General Election as an independent group and won 13 seats.
