Officials from the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) conducted an inspection tour of Ambuluwawa on Friday (19), nearly two weeks after a landslide was reported in the area, to examine locations affected by slope failure and instability.
Residents in surrounding areas guided NBRO officials to several spots on the hill where cracks were visible, with some fissures measuring more than 10 inches in width. Large boulders, suspected to have been pushed down from the summit, were observed lodged at various points along the hillside. Residents also pointed out a concrete slab believed to have fallen from higher ground and come to rest at one location.
NBRO officials also inspected cracks that have appeared in houses located at the foot of the Ambuluwawa hill.
A resident, Raja, informed officials that large black boulders pushed down from the summit still pose a risk of further rolling downhill. Residents expressed concern that certain construction activities at the Ambuluwawa hilltop may have contributed to landslides and instability in several areas, and requested authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.
The inspection tour was attended by Sinhapitiya North Grama Niladhari Anuradha Alahakon, Godagama Grama Niladhari Chathuranga Lakmal, Development Officer Asiri Wijerathna, former Grama Niladhari Prasanna Godamunna, along with other officials and residents.
