MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake has claimed that the Gampaha District has the highest number of voters in Sri Lanka, describing it as a decisive force in the country’s political landscape.

He made the remarks during a discussion held yesterday (25), asserting that electoral outcomes in Gampaha have repeatedly demonstrated the district’s political influence.

Dassanayake said voters in Gampaha have often acted ‘crazy’ and unpredictably, noting that during the United National Party administration, Upeksha Swarnamali secured more preferential votes from Gampaha than Karu Jayasuriya. He also pointed out that Chathura Senaratne, the son of Rajitha Senaratne, was elected to Parliament from the district.

Referring to Ranjan Ramanayake’s electoral success, Dassanayake said Gampaha voters sent him to Parliament largely due to his public persona and visibility. He added that he himself would be able to enter Parliament if he were to contest from Gampaha.

Emphasising the district’s broader significance, Dassanayake said Gampaha has capable political leaders and remains a key turning point in Sri Lanka’s politics.
