The Ceylon Teachers’ Union has called on the Ministry of Education to conduct an immediate review into whether the new syllabus introduced for Grade One under the education reforms is being implemented properly.

The new academic activities commenced on 29 January. However, Union Secretary Joseph Stalin stated that many of the essential resources required to carry out teaching under the revised curriculum have still not been provided to schools.

As a result, teachers have been compelled to use teaching aids and equipment purchased at their own expense to conduct lessons for students, he said.

Noting that two weeks have elapsed since the implementation began, Stalin emphasised the need for a prompt post-implementation review to assess the progress and practical challenges of the new reforms.

He further pointed out that the new syllabus is scheduled to be introduced to other grades in the coming months. In this context, he said it is crucial to examine whether there are shortcomings in the current rollout and, if identified, to rectify them without delay.
