National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa said a satyagraha campaign would be launched in protest of the arrest and detention of former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Chief Suresh Sallay.
Addressing a media briefing on Wednesday (11), Weerawansa said the conditions under which Sallay has been detained are unhygienic, unhealthy, and dangerous.
“The cell is very unclean. There are rats. They tried to obtain a statement from him but failed to get what they wanted. That is why they are doing this. He has not been given a mat to sleep on inside the cell. He is sleeping on newspapers. This is inhumane. The toilet is unhygienic, dirty, and smelly. He cannot even eat properly inside that cell. This could be a conspiracy to make him die,” Weerawansa said.
He added that Sallay played a key role in the war against the LTTE and helped save many Sri Lankan lives.
“Is this how we should treat him? Why should we tolerate this? I urge our people to come in front of the CID and remain there until this injustice is resolved,” he said.
