Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s (SJB) former Kalutara District MP Lalith Ellawala announced his retirement from politics.

He made this statement during a press conference held in Panadura today (27).

Speaking at the event, Ellawala said:
“I entered politics in 1989. In 1991, Bandaragama became a Pradeshiya Sabha member, and I later became its Leader of the Opposition and eventually its Chairman. Under my leadership, the Bandaragama PS was recognised as the best Pradeshiya Sabha in Sri Lanka.

I served as a provincial council member for 10 years and as an MP for four years, giving me 32 years of experience in politics. However, I am deeply disappointed with the current state of politics. I always conducted my political work honestly and with integrity, and I am content with what I achieved.

I entered politics without even owning a bicycle, and I leave the same way. The people supported me, and I gave my best to serve them without resorting to corruption.

Unfortunately, I feel disillusioned with the leadership of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. Despite the party’s name ‘Samagi’ (unity), there is no real unity within the party,” he said.
