Two individuals who appeared in court to provide bail for former Kapila Chandrasena, who is currently in remand custody over allegations linked to bribery in the purchase of Airbus aircraft for SriLankan Airlines, have been arrested.
The two suspects were arrested by the Keselwatta Police on Monday (5) and produced before court.
The Colombo Magistrate’s Court ordered that the suspects be remanded until 13 May.
The suspects, identified as Mohamed Rizwan and Mohamed Irshan, residents of the Sanchi Arachchiwatta area near the Aluthkade Courts Complex, were remanded following submissions made by the police.
Presenting facts before court, the Keselwatta Police stated that the two suspects did not personally know Chandrasena and had appeared as sureties after allegedly receiving Rs. 15,000 each.
Police further informed court that the suspects were taken into custody following a complaint made by court staff over suspicious circumstances surrounding their appearance as bail sureties.
Investigations have also revealed that the suspects do not have permanent employment or a stable source of income, police said.
Colombo Additional Magistrate Lahiru Silva ordered that the suspects be remanded pending further investigations and instructed police to submit a report regarding how the suspects had obtained Grama Niladhari certificates for the bail process.
