The United National Party (UNP) has alleged that a coordinated programme is being carried out through Government-linked social media platforms to undermine the Buddhist Sasana and Buddhism.

In a statement, the UNP said there is an established procedure for addressing matters relating to monastic discipline, noting that relevant Cabinet papers should first be prepared and presented to the Mahanayake Theras and the Maha Sangha before any decisions are taken.

The party further stated that while there is no opposition to taking action against errant monks, there is a recognised process that must be followed in dealing with issues concerning Bhikkhu Vinaya.
