The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has sealed off the underground secret detention facility known as “Gun Site” located within the Trincomalee Naval Base, in what is seen as a significant development in ongoing investigations into a series of alleged abductions, unlawful detentions, torture, and extortion cases, according to whatnews.lk.
The facility has been linked to long-running investigations into the alleged detention and torture of nearly 60 individuals, as well as the extraction of ransom payments from victims and their families.
The Trincomalee Magistrate is scheduled to visit and inspect the site tomorrow as part of the ongoing judicial proceedings.
Apart from the case concerning the abduction and disappearance of 11 youths, which is currently being heard before court, investigators have uncovered evidence indicating that several other individuals had also been held at the clandestine detention facility.
Among the cases linked to the alleged detention centre are the disappearance of a person identified as Shantha from Kegalle, a case currently being heard before the Polgahawela Magistrate’s Court, as well as investigations into the disappearance of two Tamil youths in Colombo, which have been reported to Colombo Magistrate’s Court No. 3.
Authorities have also informed courts regarding the disappearance of an individual identified as Pradeep from Ibbagamuwa and two young women from Trincomalee, whose cases are believed to have connections to the facility.
Several individuals who were allegedly detained at the site, along with persons said to have been involved in its operations, have already come forward to provide confidential statements before the Magistrate as investigations continue.
