The corruption trial filed by Sri Lanka’s bribery watchdog against former Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody commenced today (17) before the Colombo High Court.
The case was taken up before High Court Judge Rashantha Godawela, where the charges against the former minister were read out in open court. Jayakody pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
Following his plea, the trial proceedings officially commenced.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has alleged that while serving as Procurement Manager of the Lanka Fertilizer Company in 2016, Jayakody manipulated procurement procedures relating to a carpeting contract at the company’s warehouse complex in a manner that benefited a private company.
According to the indictment, the alleged irregularities caused a loss of Rs. 8.86 million to the state. CIABOC subsequently filed the case against the former minister on corruption charges.
