Sri Lanka Police have urged the public, particularly women, to exercise caution when forming relationships and friendships through social media and other online platforms, warning of a rise in incidents involving fraud, abuse and theft.
In a statement, Police said several complaints had been received regarding women being targeted through online interactions that later resulted in sexual abuse, financial fraud and the theft of personal belongings.
According to Police, some victims had been drugged through food or beverages, leaving them unconscious before being assaulted or robbed. In other cases, suspects had gained the trust of women by promising marriage and then deceived them into handing over money, jewellery or other valuables. Police noted that some such incidents had ultimately led to murder.
The Inspector General of Police has instructed all police stations, community policing committees and intelligence units to take proactive measures to protect the public and gather information on potential threats.
Police advised the public not to share personal information, photographs or videos with strangers online and to immediately report any suspicious activity or incidents of exploitation to the nearest police station or the Children and Women Bureau.
Emergency assistance is available through the Police hotlines 118, 119, 107 and 109.
