The death toll from the renewed unrest at Negombo Prison on Monday (6) has risen to 25, according to Police.
Hospital sources said that, among the bodies identified so far, four were prison officers and four were inmates. The identities of the remaining victims are yet to be officially confirmed.
The latest violence erupted after a tense situation resurfaced at the prison on Monday morning, despite authorities having brought Sunday’s unrest under control.
The initial clash broke out at around 1.00 p.m. on Sunday between two groups of inmates. Police said the confrontation involved a group of remand prisoners and another group of convicted inmates serving prison sentences.
Two inmates were killed in Sunday’s violence, while 38 others sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital for treatment.
