Negombo Prison inmate dies after transfer to Boossa

An inmate who was transferred to the Boossa Prison following the recent unrest at the Negombo Prison has died after being admitted to the Galle National Hospital after falling suddenly ill.

Prisons Media Spokesperson A.C. Gajanayake said the inmate died while receiving treatment at the hospital. The cause of death has not yet been officially disclosed.

Meanwhile, senior officers from prisons across the country have been summoned for a special meeting at 7:30 a.m. today (08) to discuss the situation.

Addressing Parliament, Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara said the meeting would focus on the Negombo Prison clash and measures needed to prevent similar incidents in other prisons.

A total of 1,033 inmates who had been held at the Negombo Prison have since been transferred to other prisons across the country.
