The bodies of the seven prison officers who were killed during the violent clash at the Negombo Prison were brought in a ceremonial motorcade to the Welikada Prison this morning (08) for final honours.

A special tribute was held in honour of the fallen officers before their remains were handed over to their families for final rites.

The seven officers, all attached to the Prison Special Tactical Unit, were killed during the violence that erupted inside the Negombo Prison on the morning of July 6. Authorities said they died after being subjected to brutal assaults by inmates.

The clash claimed a total of 27 lives, including the seven prison officers and 20 inmates. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
