Another inmate who had been transferred from the Negombo Prison following the recent prison unrest has died after being moved to the Agunukolapelessa Prison.
The latest death comes after an inmate transferred to Boossa Prison died while receiving treatment at the Galle National Hospital following a ‘sudden illness,’ according to prison authorities.
Prisons Media Spokesperson A.C. Gajanayake had earlier confirmed the death of the inmate transferred to Boossa.
Following the violence at the Negombo Prison, authorities transferred 1,033 inmates to prisons across the country as part of measures to restore order.
Among those transferred was Katuwellegama Suresh, who is alleged to have played a leading role in the unrest. He was moved to the Boossa Prison.
The Negombo Prison violence claimed the lives of 27 people, including seven officers attached to the Prison Special Tactical Unit. Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the latest death at Agunukolapelessa Prison.
