Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara was today (31) sentenced to death by the Colombo Permanent Trial-at-Bar.
The sentence was delivered when the Trial-at-Bar delivered its judgment in the case filed by the Attorney General against former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and former IGP Jayasundara over their alleged failure to prevent the 2019 Easter Sunday terrorist attacks despite having received sufficient intelligence warnings.
In 2022, a three-judge Trial-at-Bar acquitted both accused of all charges. However, following an appeal filed by the Attorney General, the Supreme Court ordered that the defence evidence in the case be reheard, leading to a fresh trial before the Permanent Trial-at-Bar.
The court delivered its verdict today, sentencing former IGP Jayasundara to death.
