The Department of Prisons has announced an immediate investigation into the unrest that erupted at the Mahara Prison, its Media Spokesperson A.C. Gajanayake said today (2).
Speaking to the media, Gajanayake said the disturbance caused extensive damage to several key facilities within the prison, including the kitchen, rehabilitation building, administrative office, Chief Jailer’s office, and the prison hospital.
He further stated that the cause of the unrest has not yet been determined and that investigations are underway to establish what triggered the incident.
