The Petroleum Dealers’ Association has urged the government to remove the Rs. 50 levy imposed to recover losses incurred by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC), saying its removal could provide relief to consumers.

Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, representatives of the association said the losses for which the levy was introduced had now been fully recovered and therefore there was no justification for continuing to impose it.

The association also called for the removal of the existing QR system and fuel purchase limits, claiming that the measures were causing inconvenience to the public.

Dealers further said they were facing severe financial difficulties due to the 18% Value Added Tax (VAT) imposed on fuel and the reduction of dealers’ commissions from 3% to 1.6%.

The association also claimed that fuel companies operating in Sri Lanka, including Sinopec, Lanka IOC and RM Parks, were facing various difficulties and urged the authorities to take immediate steps to address issues affecting the sector.
