SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa has said that he and his party understand the deep pain and distress experienced by the Muslim community over the decision to cremate the bodies of Muslims who died after contracting COVID-19 during the pandemic.
Rajapaksa made the remarks while addressing a public meeting in the Eluwapitiya division as part of a series of local government constituency meetings organised by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
He said the decision to enforce cremations was not a political decision taken solely by then-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, but was based on recommendations made by a committee appointed at the time.
