Police officers who direct motorists to police stations claiming that the GovPay facility is unavailable are committing a serious offence, Deputy Inspector General of Police W.P.J. Senadheera, in charge of Traffic and Road Safety, has said.
Speaking at a media briefing yesterday (13), DIG Senadheera said all police stations have been provided with the necessary mobile phones to facilitate payments through GovPay.
Accordingly, every traffic police officer on duty is required to carry the designated mobile phone, allowing motorists to pay traffic fines on the spot through GovPay without having to visit a police station.
Senadheera said the Police are also planning to introduce a point-based system under which points would be deducted from officers who unnecessarily direct motorists to police stations despite having access to the GovPay facility.
He urged the public to immediately report officers who inconvenience motorists in this manner to the relevant authorities.
