The first petition challenging the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution Bill, which has been approved by the Cabinet, has been filed before the Supreme Court, seeking a determination that the proposed legislation is inconsistent with the Constitution.
The petition was filed by T.M.S. Pasindu Silva, Treasurer of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), and the Association’s Assistant Secretary.
The petitioners have requested the Supreme Court to determine that, if the Bill is to be enacted, it must be approved by a two-thirds majority in Parliament and subsequently endorsed by the people at a referendum.
