The Sri Lanka Police, in collaboration with the Clean Sri Lanka project, has introduced two pilot initiatives aimed at minimising traffic accidents and easing congestion on the roads.

The first initiative focuses on vehicles equipped with unauthorised modifications such as coloured flashing lights, loud horns, noisy silencers, and other dangerous alterations that increase accident risks. The Police will closely monitor such violations during the operation.

The second initiative targets public transport buses, where officers will be deployed to enforce laws against traffic offences committed by drivers of these buses.

These projects are being implemented as a two-week pilot programme, running from 4 January to 19 January. During this period, police officers will issue warnings and provide instructions to drivers to remove unauthorised modifications from their vehicles.

According to the police, this initiative aims to educate both drivers and the public about traffic safety. Once the pilot phase is complete, the programme is expected to continue on a regular basis, with stricter enforcement of laws against vehicle modifications and ongoing deployment of officers to monitor public transport violations.
