The Ministry of Education says the promotion and use of alcohol, drugs or any other intoxicating substances have been completely prohibited at events organised using school logos.
Deputy Director of the Co-curricular, Guidance and Counselling Branch of the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Mahesh Ratnayake made the announcement at a media briefing held at the headquarters of the “Ratama Ekata” national operation.
Ratnayake said the Ministry had continued to receive complaints from parents that students were being exposed to drugs during major cricket encounters organised by leading schools.
He said that when organisations affiliated with schools, including old boys’ associations, or their members organise events centred around a school and use its logo, alcohol, drugs or any other intoxicating substances must not be used at such events.
Ratnayake said Circular No. 2026/10 issued by the Education Ministry empowers the Secretary to the Ministry of Education to immediately prohibit events where such substances are used.
He added that the Ministry would strictly monitor the implementation of the decision.
“We are all aware that there have been complaints from parents that children are being exposed to drugs during major cricket encounters held by leading schools. Therefore, through Circular 2026/10, we have completely prohibited the promotion or use of drugs at any event representing a school or using its logo,” Ratnayake said.
“This will be strictly monitored. An event held using a school logo is considered a school event. No form of intoxicating substance should be used at such an event. Under the circular, the Education Secretary has the authority to prohibit such an event,” he added.
