The Attorney General has instructed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to take steps to name MP Namal Rajapaksa as a suspect in the case concerning alleged bribery in the purchase of aircraft for SriLankan Airlines.

The directive followed information uncovered during investigations indicating that the case’s main suspect, former SriLankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer Kapila Chandrasena, had allegedly passed part of the bribe money he received to Rajapaksa.

The CID is expected to file a motion before the Fort Magistrate’s Court to have the case called and report the findings, seeking to name Rajapaksa as a suspect.

The case against Chandrasena and his wife is currently being heard before the Fort Magistrate’s Court.

Rajapaksa was recently arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) over allegations that he received a Rs. 10 million bribe in connection with the aircraft transaction.

He was subsequently produced before court and remanded until September 18.
