The Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) has accused the Government of making attendance at a Mahapola scholarship ceremony chaired by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya at Temple Trees a condition for receiving the scholarship.
IUSF Convener Madhushan Chandrajith said students eligible for Mahapola scholarships for the 2024/25 academic year had received letters and online notices stating that attendance at the ceremony was compulsory. According to him, letters sent to students’ homes warned that those who failed to attend, register and collect their certificates would be unable to receive the scholarship benefit.
Chandrajith alleged that the condition was an attempt to compel students to take part in political publicity. He accused the Government of turning the ceremony into a National People’s Power political event and condemned what he described as a threat to deny students a scholarship to which they were entitled.
