Sri Lanka is seeking the assistance of a former Maldivian President to appeal to the Saudi King to spare Anojan, who is facing the death penalty in Saudi Arabia, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said.
Speaking at the Cabinet media briefing on September 29, the Minister said President’s Counsel Upul Kumarapperuma and Faizer Mustapha were also involved in the effort.
He said a group of government and opposition MPs was preparing to submit an appeal to the Saudi King, together with a request from the President.
“All the steps I outlined last week are now being implemented. We are seeking the assistance of the former Maldivian President to convey this appeal to the Saudi King,” Jayatissa said.
The Minister also said Vijitha Herath was arranging discussions with the Saudi Foreign Minister during the United Nations General Assembly session to seek Anojan’s release from the death sentence.
