Two sisters have been found dead near a house in the Ginigala area of Habaraduwa, with police suspecting that they were assaulted and killed.
The incident is believed to have occurred in the early hours of yesterday (08), according to police.
The deceased women, aged 87 and 82, were sisters and both were retired teachers. Police said they were unmarried and had been living together.
The incident occurred at a house on D.C. Amarasinghe Mawatha in Ginigala, Habaraduwa. Police suspect the women may have been attacked while they were outside the house collecting wood apples that had fallen from a large wood apple tree in their garden.
Police said one of the women had suffered a severe head injury after allegedly being struck with a stone, resulting in heavy bleeding. The other woman was found with several scratch injuries on her face.
Further investigations into the incident are being conducted by the Habaraduwa Police.
