ITAK Parliamentary Group Leader MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam has opposed plans to establish additional liquor outlets in Jaffna and Kilinochchi, calling on the government to focus on regional development and public welfare in the Northern Province.
Speaking in Parliament today (21) under Standing Order 27(2), the MP raised concerns about proposals to open new liquor outlets in the two districts, highlighting objections from the public and the proximity of proposed locations to schools, temples and residential neighbourhoods.
He emphasised that development in the Northern Province should prioritise improving living standards, strengthening public services and expanding economic opportunities instead of increasing the availability of alcohol.
The MP also sought clarification from the government regarding the 361 liquor licences reportedly issued in 2024 during the administration of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
He requested the disclosure of the names of politicians who recommended the licences, information about their recipients, the findings of investigations into alleged irregularities and the number of licences that had subsequently been revoked.
Rasamanickam further highlighted concerns about the production and distribution of illicit alcohol, particularly in Batticaloa, and called for stronger law enforcement measures and stricter penalties for repeat offenders.
He questioned whether the high taxation imposed on legally produced alcohol was driving consumers towards cheaper illicit products, potentially exposing them to greater health risks and increasing pressure on the public healthcare system.
The MP also requested district level data on illicit alcohol related offences and repeat offenders for 2025 and 2026. Additionally, he sought details of liquor licences proposed, approved or issued in Jaffna and Kilinochchi since September 2024.
