Chief Government Whip Nalinda Jayatissa today, 10 January, responded to allegations made by New Democratic Front (NDF) MP Chamara Sampath Dasanayake regarding the expenses of the Clean Sri Lanka inauguration held on 1 January.

Dasanayake had accused the government of spending Rs. 7 million on the event, claiming the funds were used without following proper procedures.

Refuting the allegations, Jayatissa clarified that the approved cost for the event was only Rs. 900,000, and even that amount has not yet been paid.

“No funds were spent on hiring singers, writing songs, or any such activities. The Rs. 7 million figure is completely false. As part of the procedure, we obtained quotations for various activities, but Dasanayake has been misled by these figures—or by whoever provided them to him,” Jayatissa said.

Dasanayake had stated yesterday that he would resign from his post if his allegations were proven wrong.

“We’re not asking you to resign, but stop spreading lies like this,” Jayatissa responded.
