Minister Bimal Rathnayake expressed confidence that the Election Commission would hold the Local Government (LG) elections either in the second or fourth week of April 2025.

Speaking to the media in Jaffna, Rathnayake revealed that all parties had jointly submitted a draft bill to Parliament to amend the Local Authorities Elections Act to facilitate the LG elections.

“With the agreement of party leaders, the government has presented a draft bill to Parliament regarding the re-conduct of the local government elections. While various parties have filed petitions in court, we believe these will not significantly delay the elections,” he stated.

He added, “The court has limited days to deliver its verdict. Therefore, we are hopeful that the Election Commission will proceed with elections in the second or fourth week of April.”

The Minister also highlighted the government’s commitment to holding the Provincial Council Elections in the Northern Province and across Sri Lanka without further delays.
