Ahimsa Wickrematunge, daughter of slain journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge, has called for the impeachment of Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe, accusing him of gross abuse of power and neglect of duty in the handling of her father’s assassination case.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, Wickrematunge strongly criticised the Attorney General’s recent decision to discharge three suspects in the case, describing it as a deliberate move that undermines justice. She argued that this was not an “innocent mistake” but a reflection of a culture of “callousness and complacency” within the Attorney General’s Department.

The letter details the extensive investigation conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) from 2015 to 2019, which uncovered significant evidence, including allegations that key police officers obstructed justice by tampering with evidence related to the murder. However, Wickrematunge claims that Ranasinghe ignored this evidence and relied on selective and outdated information to drop the charges against key suspects, including former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Prasanna Nanayakkara.

She further alleged that the Attorney General’s decision aligns with previous efforts by political actors to derail investigations into high-profile crimes. Wickrematunge urged the government to take decisive action by moving forward with impeachment proceedings in Parliament, stating that Ranasinghe is “no longer fit to serve as Attorney General.”

The letter, which was also copied to the Minister of Justice and the Leader of the Opposition, places pressure on the government to act in a case that has long been a symbol of impunity in Sri Lanka’s justice system.
