Trailblazer: CID Welcomes Its First Female Director in History

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Imesha Muthumala has made history by becoming the first female Director of Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

SSP Muthumala’s career with the Sri Lanka Police spans over 17 years, beginning on 3 November 2007 when she joined as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). In June 2021, she was appointed Deputy Director of the CID, a position she held until her recent promotion.

Her academic achievements include a science degree from the University of Ruhuna and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the Open University of Sri Lanka. She has also completed specialised training in crisis management at the Hawaii Police Training Institute in the US, prevention of money laundering in Bangkok under the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), community policing at the Royal Police Academy in Malaysia, and cyber policing at the Hyderabad Police Academy in India.

SSP Muthumala’s service portfolio includes stints at the Nugegoda Police Division, the Police Clearance Unit, and the CID.

She is set to retire in 2041.
