The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) will take necessary steps regarding the killing of two suspects in police custody this morning (22 February), just hours after their arrest, newly elected BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya said.

The two suspects were arrested yesterday (21 February) following a shooting in Kotahena. According to the police, they were killed this morning while being taken to a location where they had allegedly hidden weapons. The police claim the suspects attempted to seize a firearm and open fire on the officers. A police officer was also injured in the incident.

Posting on Facebook, Amarasuriya stated, “The killing of suspects in police custody cannot and should not happen. Such deaths are an affront to the rule of law and will tarnish the image of Sri Lanka.”

He referred to a statement issued by the BASL under his signature on 26 November 2021, highlighting a similar situation where warnings had been issued beforehand. Amarasuriya added that the matter was discussed in detail at today’s Bar Council meeting, and necessary steps will be taken.
