The Government has not made any decision so far regarding the provision of police officers for the security of MPs, Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala said.

Addressing media reports suggesting that all MPs would receive police security, Wijepala emphasised that there has been no change in the Government’s policy on the matter. While requests for security had been submitted by a group of opposition MPs, no final decision has been made.

The Speaker had informed the acting Inspector General of Police to review the matter, and a report has been requested from the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security regarding potential threats to the MPs who made the requests.

Wijepala stated that police protection will only be granted if deemed necessary based on the findings of the report. Notably, no MPs from the ruling party have requested additional security.

In the meantime, instructions have been issued to implement a special security programme at the police station level for MPs’ residences and public events.
