Royal College, Colombo has issued an official apology regarding an incident that took place during the school’s Cycle Parade 2025.

In a statement signed by Acting Principal L.W.K. Silva, the school acknowledged that a student was seen carrying a wooden cross, a sacred Christian symbol, in an inappropriate manner. The administration stated that the act was deeply concerning, particularly as it occurred on Ash Wednesday, a significant day for Christians.

The school categorically stated that the act was unsanctioned by Royal College and does not align with the institution’s multi-faith values.

The Catholic Church has condemned the incident. In a letter to the school principal, National and Catholic Education Director Rev. Fr. Gemunu Dias stated that the incident sparked shock within Archbishop His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith and the Catholic community.

The Royal College administration has pledged to take remedial measures to prevent such incidents in the future and announced a thorough investigation into the matter.
