Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred the prestigious Mithra Vibhushana medal by the Government of Sri Lanka, in recognition of his exceptional contribution to strengthening bilateral relations and preserving the shared cultural and spiritual heritage between the two nations.

The Mithra Vibhushana medal was specially created to honour extraordinary global friendships. Its intricate symbolism reflects the depth of India-Sri Lanka relations: the Dharma Chakra signifies the nations’ shared Buddhist roots, the Pun Kalasa represents prosperity and renewal, while the Navarathna—nine precious gems set within a globe surrounded by lotus petals—symbolises enduring friendship. The presence of the Sun and Moon on the medal further denotes the timeless bond between the two countries.

The Sri Lankan government described the honour as a tribute to Prime Minister Modi’s “visionary leadership” and steadfast commitment to regional cooperation, cultural revival, and spiritual diplomacy.
