Parliament Notifies EC of Vacancy Following MP Kosala Nuwan Jayaweera’s Death

The Parliament of Sri Lanka has officially informed the Election Commission that a parliamentary seat has fallen vacant following the death of National People’s Power (NPP) MP Kosala Nuwan Jayaweera, who represented the Kegalle District.

According to the Parliament’s Communications Department, Acting Secretary General Chaminda Kularatne notified the Chairman of the Election Commission in writing, in accordance with Article 66(a) of the Constitution. The vacancy is effective from 6 April 2025, the day of Jayaweera’s passing.

The notification was also issued under Section 64(1) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981, as amended by the Elections (Special Provisions) Act, No. 35 of 1988.

Kosala Nuwan Jayaweera, aged 38, died of a sudden heart attack on 6 April while receiving treatment at Karawanella Hospital.
