Freedom People’s Congress (FPC) Leader Dullas Alahapperuma, in a strongly worded letter, accused former President Ranil Wickremesinghe of unjustifiably postponing the Local Government Election, describing the action as a “political abortion” following widespread corruption and “economic murder” of the nation’s finances.

Alahapperuma’s letter, addressed to the President, Opposition Leader, all Members of Parliament, and the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), highlighted that due to Wickremesinghe’s ‘arbitrary’ decision to postpone the LG Election, over Rs 720 million of public money allocated for election preparations was wasted.

Titled “Pay the Price for Aborting Democracy; A Criminal Charge Against President Ranil,” the letter emphasized several incidents and expressed the party’s expectation that the new government, led by the current President, will take action against these “economic hitmen.”

“The money wasted is not private funds brought by politicians; these are public funds. Not only has such a large amount of money been squandered, but Wickremesinghe has also mocked the Judiciary, the Election Commission, and the public by postponing the election just before the date scheduled for postal votes,” Alahapperuma stressed.

He urged the President and relevant institutions to take legal action against this ‘criminal offense’ committed by Wickremesinghe and recover the wasted funds from those responsible.

Alahapperuma further called on Wickremesinghe to make amends by returning the public funds he allegedly misused, thereby adding a moral and civilized chapter to political history.
