Police in Sri Lanka have been directed to inspect individuals wearing helmets without motorcycles, following a surge in crimes reportedly committed by suspects using helmets to conceal their identities.
The directive, issued by Police Headquarters, instructs officers to stop and inspect anyone wearing a helmet while on foot and displaying suspicious behaviour. Officers are also authorised to search their belongings.
According to police, a series of recent crimes — including shootings and murders — have been carried out by individuals wearing helmets, prompting the precautionary measure. Authorities emphasised that helmets are intended solely for motorcyclists and pillion riders for safety purposes, not as disguises.
